Many Christians these days believe that miracles are something that used to happen in the past – that it was meant for the time of Moses and the disciples, but not for our modern age. However, nothing could be more far from the truth. With as many as 7.6 billion people living on our planet, the need for God’s miracles on Earth are even more needed now.
The issue is that many miracles go unnoticed these days between all of the noise and tasks fighting for our attention. We may not hear about the miracles that are happening every day, but this is only because they are not being spoken about as loudly and as often as everything else going on in the world.
Below are five modern miracles that have happened recently that deserve our attention. Our God is powerful and these miracles are reminders that God is at work in our lives today and forever.
Miracle #1:
Back in March of 2015 an unfortunate loss of control caused Lynn Jennifer Groesbeck to land her car in the Spanish Fork River in Utah. 14 hours passed before police officers and firefighters appeared on the scene to discover the car hanging upside down over the icy cold water.
The first responders reported that before anyone could even get into the car they heard an adult voice cry out, “Help me!” from inside of the car. However, they found that the voice could not have come from Groesbeck as it was quickly apparent that she had most likely died from the impact.
What they found instead was Groesbeck’s young 18-month-old daughter named Lily, buckled into her car seat but hanging upside down just above the water. How was this little girl able to survive hanging like that for 14 hours in the freezing weather? Where did the adult voice that called out for help come from? The rescuers could not explain the answers to these mysteries.
Miracle #2:
In September of 2014 Ruby Graupera-Cassirmiro was undergoing a cesarean section for her baby girl who was about to be born. Unfortunately, Graupera-Cassirmiro had amniotic fluid from the placenta leak into her bloodstream during the procedure causing her to go completely unconscious.
Amniotic Fluid Embolism is very rare, but because it can trigger heart and lung collapse and massive bleeding, this type of childbirth emergency can be very serious for the mother’s life.
For three hours the doctors tried to revive Graupera-Cassimiro until they decided that they would have to invite the family in to say their last goodbyes. What should have been a very joyous day for the family had very quickly turned into a day of mourning.
Suddenly, after 45 minutes without a pulse, a huge miracle happened and Graupera-Cassimiro’s heart began to beat all on its own. She said that during her experience with death she felt as if she was floating down a tunnel with other spiritual beings who were surrounded in light.
The new mother had a complete recovery with no brain damage and got to meet her very healthy baby girl shortly after.
Miracle #3:
In Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, 22-month-old Gardell Martin was playing outside with his siblings in March of 2015 when he fell into a creek and was pulled away in water that was only 34-degrees.
Thankfully, a neighbor found Gardell a quarter of a mile away, but he was unconscious and did not have a pulse. Gardell was immediately transported to a hospital while paramedics performed CPR on him for nearly two hours. Once he arrived at the hospital, doctors took his temperature and found that it was 77-degrees which is very low compared to the normal body temperature of 98.6-degrees.
For over 24 hours Gardell remained under constant surveillance by doctors and underwent a gradual process to warm his body. Miraculously he eventually awoke and what is even more amazing is that he woke up in perfect health with no neurological damage.
Miracle #4:
It didn’t seem at all possible that Grayson Kirby would survive after being thrown from a demolition derby car in Ruckersville, Virginia in June of 2014. His lungs were crushed, almost every bone in his body was broken, his kidneys were failing, and he was not waking up from his coma. Even if he was to wake up, Kirby would not ever the be same again after going through multiple strokes and hemorrhages after the accident.
However, his family believed in the power of prayer and were determined to not give up on Kirby’s life. Their community of thousands continued to show support with prayer and love during this very scary time.
Kirby’s doctors also wanted to try everything they could to keep him alive and thought they might have one last way to bring Kirby back. Even though Kirby was a trauma patient, they hooked him up to a machine normally used for transplant patients and miraculously it worked!
Just ten days after Kirby was thrown from the demolition derby car, he opened his eyes and mouthed, “I love you,” to his dad. “I’m humble, I’m grateful, just amazed,” Kirby said. “I know that God saved me. I know that prayer and believing saved me.”
Miracle #5:
For 14 years the Catholic Church investigated a young boy’s miracle, putting it through the Church’s very rigid vetting process so that they could make their official decision.
In 1998, four-year-old Luke Burgie was suffering from a debilitating gastrointestinal condition. For six months he was experiencing eight to ten violent bouts of diarrhea and doctors could not figure out a cure. They tried everything from antibiotics to diets and tests.
As the doctors continued to look into other explanations for Burgie’s condition, the young boy’s mother decided that it was time to get some very strong prayer warriors on their side. She asked Sister Margaret Mary Preister and Sister Evangeline Spenner to join her in prayer for her son’s recovery.
For nine days the two nuns prayed a special vigil for Burgie and as soon as their prayer vigil had ended, the little boy woke up no longer in pain. His condition never returned. After completing a thorough investigation, the Church announced that they believed Burgie’s recovery had been a miracle.
With all of these miracles there is the underlying theme of prayer and belief that God would show up in each situation. Matthew 17:20 says, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’ and it will move.”
Praying we would all have the faith today that God can move all the mountains in our lives!
