Did you know that prayer and fasting can facilitate a powerful spiritual detox?

We all go through periods where we feel we need a reset. In the natural that may translate into trying to get back into shape by joining a gym or trying out a new diet. There are of course 101 diets, but even more effective for the believer is making the decision to have a spiritual reset through prayer and fasting.

As with diets, there are many different types of fasts, from going on a liquid fast for a number of days or the popular 10-day Daniel Fast which limits you to fruit and vegetables. Of course, food is not the only thing a person can fast from, it could be literally anything.

There are many examples of fasting in the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments, including the example of Jesus who fasted for 40 days. God may not be calling you to a 40 day fast, but He may be leading you into a period of heightened prayer.

The power of prayer and fasting

In the video below, James Aladiran of Prayer Storm, a leading British intercessory prayer ministry in Manchester, shares on the power of prayer and fasting and how it can impact your spiritual journey and prayer life.

“Fasting is not about abstaining from food, so much as from fleshly desires for the purpose of seeking God,” James says. “When we fast we humble ourselves before God, declaring our dependence on Him. It’s not about trying to twist God’s arm. It’s about releasing the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.”

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?” (Isaiah 58:6)
