The trumpet is blowing to say ‘Harvesters Arise'. We are coming to a key moment in our day when God will once again release ‘sent ones’. These are a generation of laborers thrust out to overwhelm the earth. They will certainly rush on the city and they may even run on a wall (Joel 2). But one thing is for sure, they are the army of the Lord made to plunder the plunderers.
The Harvesters
The ‘sent ones’ are harvesters both prepared and sent–the operative word being ‘sent’! The importance of being sent was underscored by Jesus. After pronouncing the readiness of the harvest, He urged the disciples to pray for God to send laborers. He did not simply say, ‘go’. Rather He urged them to pursue the Father for ‘sent ones’. It is the sending which counts most. The difference is only evident in their effect.
“Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” – Matthew 9:37-38
The point is this: There is a tremendous difference between those who simply go and those who are sent. Many have gone while fewer have been sent. While we are not here to criticize the efforts of God’s faithful servants, we need to expect more from ourselves in the victory column. Faith demands we anticipate and work toward a harvest of Biblical proportions.
What might that look like? Besides the thousand of new converts, rampant church planting expanding throughout the known world, and many signs and wonders, the early disciples were described in superlative terms. At one point Paul’s team was defined by their enemies as those who turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6). This is the intended effect of ‘sent ones’.
Overcoming Power
This first generation harvesters were empowered with this level of overcoming power. Their influence could be described similar to the way the light pierces the darkness – darkness is completely obliterated.
“And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” – John 1:5
The darkness has no response or defense against light. The essence of light dispels and overcomes darkness, without so much as the sound of struggle. This same effect was implied when Jesus told the disciples ‘you are the light of the world’ (Matthew 5:14). It is this kind of supremacy we must expect when we are sent. Darkness will always yield it's ground.
It is not a question of gifting, talent, or charisma but of the power to outlast, wear down and overrun. John wrote ‘whatever is born of God overcomes the world’ (1 John 5:4). What God births is by nature superior in force.
The harvesters we speak of cannot be dissuaded or discouraged as they will be impervious to the weaponry of darkness. In a real way they are synonymous with God Himself.
Rooted in God
This compels us to ask ourselves ‘how rooted in God we truly are?' Our effect on the world is the litmus test of what sort we are. Paul rebuked carnal Christians in His day for acting like ‘mere’ men. The coming harvesters are not ‘mere men’ nor will they act the part; they are the offspring of God, in effect, the sons of God.
Their influence is reflected in Job as he seeks to outline the supremacy of God. Speaking of God’s unmatched power he said:
“If He withholds the waters, they dry up; If He sends them out, they overwhelm the earth.” – Job 12:15
The language carries a sense of absolute finality. ‘If He sends them they overwhelm the earth.' In part, the evidence they are sent, is in their capacity to overwhelm. By God‘s design, His ‘sent ones’ cannot be anything but overwhelming. So pray to the Father that He send laborers into this harvest.
