Someone I know was given the “Wonder Bible” (As Seen On TV). This battery-operated device reads God’s Word to you; or at least it’s supposed to. This one however had a problem; something in the battery-charging portion didn’t work, so try as you might, the device did not read to you. That Bible don’t work no more!

But wait; there was nothing wrong with the Bible. The Bible was still there, in its entirety. Every word spoken by God into the quills of the writers and as translated under King James back in the 17th Century is still intact. It was the manmade element that made this device not work and it was the manmade part that rendered this Bible “ineffective”.

That’s a problem too many people have with God’s Word today. They think the Bible doesn’t work in the 21st Century. Today’s modern man and woman think that God has not been paying attention all this time. Surely the precepts and commandments written hundreds of years ago cannot be relevant today?!

After all, our culture has changed. We are “progressive” and “liberal” and have “freed” ourselves from outdated ideas. We have outgrown God’s commandments as He gave them to Moses on Mt. Sinai. We have gone beyond the beatitudes and the morals preached and modeled by Jesus Christ. It’s time to put the old-fashion Bible back on the shelf where it belongs. Because, after all, as anyone can see, the Bible simply don’t work today!

Love thy neighbor? Turn the other cheek? Don’t seek revenge when wronged or hurt? Love your wife, husband and children? Confess your sins (sins! why even that word is an affront to modern civilization)? Follow Christ? Serve others? Put others ahead of yourselves? Be faithful to the church and serve there? Not in this “Me” generation!

And how outdated are these Biblical precepts: God created each one as either male or female; marriage is a covenant with God and one man, one woman; practicing sexuality outside of the bond of marriage is sin; practicing homosexuality is sin!

Yes, and so is gossip, lying, cheating, killing (the unborn, babies, children, adults) and more.

No, my friend…your Bible isn’t broken. God’s Word is still as true today as on the day He gave it. It is eternal and will be used to judge us in a coming day. The precepts and commands in the Bible were given for our good and for our protection. The promises were given for our comfort and joy. And the God who wrote it loves us so much He gave His Son to die for our sins!

The Bible is still very much intact; it always will be. But you and I, well, we’re broken. Born in sin, deserving eternal hell. But God (I’m glad those words repeat in the Bible) stepped out of eternity into our world to save us. And in faith believing, as He wrote it in the Bible, we can be saved forever.

So dust off the Bible; whether you have it in paper and ink, or on your phone or tablet; or maybe you’ve got the Wonder Bible. Read it! Study it! Understand it! (God will give you the ability)! Then obey it!

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (II Timothy 3:16)

“The Bible stands like a rock undaunted, ‘mid the raging storms of time; its pages burn with the truth eternal, and they glow with a light sublime.

“The Bible stands like a mountain tow’ring far above the works of men; its truth by none ever was refuted, and destroy it they never can.

“The Bible stands and it will forever, when the world has passed away; by inspiration it has been given, all its precepts I will obey.

“The Bible stands every test we give it, for its Author is divine; by grace alone I expect to live it and to prove and to make it mine.

“The Bible stands though the hills may tumble; it will firmly stand when the earth shall crumble; I will plant my feet on its firm foundation for the Bible stands!” (Haldor Lillenas 1917)
