Speaker of the US. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan as part of her Asia tour. The visit goes against warnings from the Biden administration. Biden’s camp is worried China will retaliate but Pelosi seems unphased.
Against the backdrop of a brewing cold war between the U.S. and China, Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan has U.S. Defense Department officials on high alert over Chinese movements in the region.
China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, made threats as Pelosi, the highest-ranking American politician to visit the island in 25 years, set out to visit the nation.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a news conference: “If the US insists on going down the wrong path, China will definitely take resolute and forceful measures to firmly defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The United States must be fully responsible for all the consequences caused by this.”
Clearly, Pelosi is poking the dragon. Or so she thinks. She’s really poking a principality. Will this spark an all out cold war between China and the U.S.? Or is China just breathing fire?
