I’ve written about it, but I’ve never seen it manifest through people.
Indeed, it’s an ancient spirit not seen manifesting through people too often in our days, though I have seen it manifest in atmospheres.
It’s the siren spirit. I wrote about this in my book, The Spiritual Warriors Guide to Defeating Water Spirits. But when I encountered this siren spirit at a recent meeting it took me a moment to discern it. The room was fairly quiet as I called some to repentance who were operating in offense. Others were operating in witchcraft.
As the room settled I heard an eerie sound that I could not immediately distinguish. It was more than eerie, it aggravated my spirit. I suddenly noticed a woman making very subtle gyrations and hand movements. When I walked down the aisle, I heard the sound emanating from her mouth. She was singing a strange song with no words.
I walked back up front and consulted with another prophet and said, “She’s singing an ancient song that sounds like it came from folklore.” Just then, I heard the Lord say, “It’s a siren spirit.”
What is a Siren Spirit?
Isaiah 13:22 (Douay-Rheims Bible) mentions sirens: “And owls shall answer one another there, in the houses thereof, and sirens in the temples of pleasure.” This verse connects sirens with “temples of pleasure,” which gives way to the seductive nature of these sprits.
Sirens, known in some cultures as nixens, have largely become synonymous with mermaids, but they are not mermaids. Noah Webster, who was a Christian, compiled dictionaries. One is called Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary & Bible: New Heart English Bible. It defines sirens this way:
“One of three sea nymphs—or, according to some writers, of two—said to frequent an island near the coast of Italy, and to sing with such sweetness that they lured mariners to destruction.” Webster also defines it as “an enticing, dangerous woman; something which is insidious or deceptive; any long, slender amphibian of the genus of Siren or family Sirenidae, destitute of hind legs and pelvis, and having permanent external gills as well as lungs. They inhabit the swamps, lagoons, and ditches of the Southern United States.”
While a mermaid is half fish and half human, a siren is half bird, half human, according to Green mythology, and were children of the river gods. Typically, they played any number of musical instruments but often harps and as the art world evolved male sirens gave way to female sirens as a deadly seductresses. Speaking of the siren, the great artist Leonardo da Vinci wrote, “The siren sings so sweetly that she lulls the mariners to sleep; then she climbs upon the ships and kills the sleeping mariners.”
Sirens Must Seduce Before They Deceive
Ultimately, the siren spirit is in the hybrid family of the Dagon spirit, the god of the Philistines. The name Dagon means “little fish” and he was known as the storm god, which is often paralleled to a fertility god because storms ruin harvests.
We see Dagon in Judges 16:23-25 in the context of capturing Samson, “Now the lords of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice, for they said, ‘Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hands.’ When the people saw him, they praised their god, for they said, ‘Our god has given our enemy into our hands, even the destroyer of our country, who has slain many of us.”
Like siren spirits, Dagon wants to capture your heart so it can capture your anointing. Put another way, Dagon wants your worship so it can displace the presence of God, the source of your anointing, in your life. Dagon wants to blind you from the truth of who you are and the source of your life. Dagon wants to cut off your authority to pray—he’s after your head. You open the door for Dagon—a merfolk spirit—through idolatry. Dagon will bring storms in your life. If you focus on those storms you will become barren and unfruitful.
Dagon works to capture your heart through idolatry. Any time you worship an idol, you’re displacing God from the chief place in your life. What is idolatry? It’s when you put something above God in your life. It’s when you are more devoted to something than God. That could be a job, a relationship, money, etc. Idolatry is always a danger. The Apostle Paul lists it as a work of the flesh (see Galatians 5:20). We'll talk more about idolatry in the next chapter as we learn there how to battle this spirit.
Remember this, siren, Dagon, or any other spirit cannot deceive you until it first seduces you. Remember, Delilah deceived Samson in the context of seduction. Sirens and merman spirits work in the realm of seduction—tapping into the idolatry in your heart as bait to capture you and draw you into its temple.
