In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s easy to jump out of bed, grab a quick breakfast, and rush out the door without much thought to what lies ahead. But make no mistake, the enemy is roaming about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour (1 Pet. 5:8).

As believers, we are his mortal enemy so we can’t walk as the world walks. We are called to walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise (Eph. 5:15). One of the wisest things we can do each morning is to bathe our day in prayer, particularly prayers of protection.

What Are Prayers of Protection?

Prayers of protection are petitions to the Lord to safeguard us from harm, danger, and the snares of the enemy. These are not just rote recitations repeatedly without much thought. Protection prayers serve as powerful declaration of God’s promises over our lives spoken in faith.

Protection prayers cover our physical well-being, our mental and emotional state, and our spiritual journey. They are a shield, a divine covering that we place over ourselves and our loved ones, entrusting every step of our day to the Lord’s care.

What Protection Prayers Look Like, Biblically

The Bible is full of examples of prayers for protection. One of the most famous is Psalm 91, often referred to as the “Soldier’s Psalm” because of its powerful promises of deliverance and safety.

Verses 1-2 say, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’”

This entire Psalm is a beautiful prayer of protection, reminding us of God’s faithfulness to shield us from the enemy’s schemes.

In the New Testament, we see the apostle Paul praying for the protection of believers. In 2 Thessalonians 3:3, he declares, “But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.” Paul understood the necessity of God’s protection in the face of spiritual warfare and the daily battles we encounter.

Why We Should Pray Protection Prayers

If we step out into our day without covering ourselves in prayer, we leave ourselves vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy.

Praying for protection in the morning is not just about avoiding physical harm—it’s about guarding our hearts, minds, and spirits from the fiery darts of the wicked one. It’s about asking the Lord to lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil (Matt. 6:13).

When we pray these prayers, we are positioning ourselves under God’s wings, where no weapon formed against us shall prosper (Is. 54:17).

Moreover, praying for protection is an act of faith and trust in God’s sovereignty. It’s acknowledging that we cannot protect ourselves, but He is our strong tower, our refuge, and our defense (Proverbs 18:10). It’s a declaration that we rely not on our strength or wisdom but on His.

Action Plan

As you rise each morning, take a moment to pause and seek the Lord’s protection over your day. Declare His Word over your life, ask for His angels to encamp around you, and trust in His unfailing love and protection.

In doing so, you are not only safeguarding yourself against the enemy’s plans but also walking in the peace and confidence that comes from knowing that the Lord is with you, guarding your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore (Psalm 121:8).

Let prayer be your first line of defense every morning, and watch how the Lord moves mightily to protect and preserve you throughout your day.
