Have you ever noticed that right after you experience a breakthrough—whether it’s a healing, a financial blessing, or a spiritual victory—the enemy suddenly seems to come at you with full force? That’s not your imagination. It’s a very real tactic of Satan called the counterattack.
Why Backlash Happens After a Breakthrough
When you press through the battle and win, you’ve just plundered the enemy’s camp. You’ve taken ground he doesn’t want you to have. You’ve stepped into a new level of freedom, anointing, or opportunity. And the devil is furious about it.
Just look at Elijah. After calling down fire from heaven and slaying the prophets of Baal, he faced immediate backlash from Jezebel (1 Kings 19). One moment, he was on Mount Carmel in victory; the next, he was in the wilderness running for his life. The same spirit of intimidation that opposed him will try to oppose you after your victories.
This is why the Bible warns us to be sober and vigilant because our adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). Victories attract the enemy’s attention. Breakthroughs put a target on your back. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to bow to backlash.
How to Resist the Counterattack
-
Stay Alert – Don’t assume that once you’ve won, the fight is over. Remain watchful in prayer and in the Word.
-
Guard Your Mind – The enemy often comes first with fear, doubt, or discouragement. Take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5).
-
Stand on the Word – Declare God’s promises over your life and refuse to retreat. Your sword is sharper than the enemy’s lies.
-
Stay in Community – Elijah isolated himself after the attack, and it nearly destroyed him. Don’t pull away. Stay connected to those who will cover you in prayer.
-
Rest in God’s Presence – After the fight, you need refreshing. Let the Holy Spirit restore your soul so you’re not vulnerable to fatigue.
Breakthrough is meant to propel you forward, not knock you into retreat. The devil may try to counterattack, but greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).
Prayer Against Demonic Counterattacks
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for every victory You’ve given me. I repent for any open doors or careless places where I’ve let the enemy back in. Today, I plead the blood of Jesus over my mind, body, and spirit.
I decree divine protection around me and my family. I bind every spirit of backlash, retaliation, and counterattack. I say you will not prosper against me. I command every fiery dart of the wicked one to fall to the ground, null and void.
Lord, release Your angels to guard me on every side. Restore the strength, peace, and joy that the enemy has tried to steal. Let fresh oil be poured over me for the next assignment. I declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and I walk forward in victory.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
