Check out my course, Developing Prophetic Boldness at School of the Spirit.
One of the enemy’s most insidious weapons against God’s prophets is fear. This paralyzing force can silence our voices, inhibit our actions, and block us from fulfilling our divine calling to speak the Word of the Lord. But we are not without defense.
Let’s delve into how the enemy uses fear and how we, as God’s warriors, can overcome it to prophesy boldly in His name.
First, remember this: Fear is not merely an emotion; it’s a spirit sent from the enemy to cripple us. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Recognize that fear is a foreign spirit, alien to the spirit of God that dwells within us.
Biblical Examples of Overcoming Fear
The Bible is replete with stories of God’s people who faced fear head-on and triumphed through faith.
- Moses: God called Moses to deliver Israel from Egypt, yet Moses was riddled with fear and self-doubt. In Exodus 4:10-12, Moses pleaded, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent… I am slow of speech and tongue.” But God reassured him, “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
- Jeremiah: When called to be a prophet, Jeremiah’s immediate response was fear due to his youth and inexperience. In Jeremiah 1:6-8, he cried out, “Alas, Sovereign Lord, I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” Yet God’s response was, “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you.”
- Elijah: After his victory over the prophets of Baal, Elijah fled in fear from Jezebel’s threats. 1 Kings 19:3-4 describes how Elijah, overwhelmed by fear, prayed for death. God’s response was to provide rest, nourishment, and a renewed mission, showing that God’s provision conquers fear.
Identifying the Enemy’s Strategy
Fear manifests in various forms: intimidation, doubt, and the fear of persecution.
- Intimidation: The enemy constantly reminds us of our past failures, trying to convince us we’re unworthy to speak for God.
- Doubt: The enemy plants seeds of doubt about our calling and our message, causing us to waver. James 1:6 warns, “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt.”
- Persecution: Fear of opposition and suffering is a major weapon. Jesus said in John 15:20, “If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” The enemy magnifies this fear to silence us.
Strategies to Overcome Fear
To conquer fear, we must anchor ourselves in God’s promises and the power of the Holy Spirit.
- God’s Presence: Isaiah 41:10 declares, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” His presence is our ultimate security.
- Holy Spirit’s Power: Acts 4:31 shows how the early church prayed and was filled with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to speak God’s word with boldness.
- Peace in Christ: Jesus offers a peace that surpasses all understanding. John 14:27 states, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
- Community Support: A supportive faith community helps combat fear. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
Fear is a formidable foe, but it is no match for the power and love of God. By embracing God’s presence, relying on the Holy Spirit, resting in Christ’s peace, and standing together in community, we can break free from the chains of fear and boldly prophesy His word.
Reject the spirit of fear. Embrace the spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. Step into your prophetic calling with courage and confidence, knowing that He who called you is faithful and will equip you for every good work.
Stay bold, stay fearless, and let the voice of the Lord roar through you!
Let’s pray:
