In a world fraught with wars, terrorism, famines, pestilences, and spiritual challenges, the role of the watchman has never been more critical. Scripture calls us to be vigilant, standing guard over our families, communities, and nations through prayer and spiritual discernment. Jesus put it plainly, “Watch and pray (Matt. 24:42).

In ancient times, watchmen stood on the city walls, alert to any approaching danger. Today, this role translates into spiritual vigilance, where watchmen are called to discern and intercede against spiritual threats. As I mentioned in my book, The Making of a Watchman, the watchman call is not just for a select few. We are all called into this on one level or another.

I wrote, “God is looking for those who will stand on the wall, who will watch and pray, who will alert the people and intercede on their behalf.” The watchman anointing is about being attuned to the Holy Spirit, ready to respond to His promptings, and committed to interceding for others.

How to Watch and Pray Effectively

1. Cultivate Spiritual Sensitivity: To be an effective watchman, it’s crucial to develop a keen sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. This involves regular times of prayer, worship, and immersion in the Word of God. LeClaire encourages believers to seek the Lord’s presence daily, saying, “The more time you spend with God, the more you’ll recognize His voice and discern His guidance.”
2. Stay Alert and Vigilant: Watchmen must remain spiritually alert. This means being aware of the signs of the times and discerning the spiritual climate. LeClaire advises, “Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what to pray for. Be attentive to the burdens He places on your heart.”
3. Intercede with Authority: Effective watchmen pray with authority, understanding their identity in Christ. Jesus has given us authority over the works of the enemy (Luke 10:19). LeClaire writes, “When you pray, do so with the confidence that your prayers can change situations, release protection, and bring divine intervention.”
4. Be Persistent in Prayer: Persistence is key in the life of a watchman. Spiritual battles are not always won quickly. LeClaire encourages, “Don’t give up. Keep pressing in. Your persistent prayers can wear down the enemy’s resistance.”
5. Build a Community of Watchmen: The task of watching and praying is not meant to be done in isolation. LeClaire highlights the importance of community, saying, “Join with other watchmen in your church or community. There is power in unified prayer and collective discernment.”

The Impact of Watchmen

When watchmen rise up to watch and pray, they become a powerful force for God’s kingdom. They can thwart the enemy’s plans, bring protection and peace to their communities, and usher in revival and spiritual awakening. Vigilant prayer can result in miraculous interventions and divine protection.

The to watch and pray is urgent and vital in these times. As I wrote in my book, “The world needs watchmen who will rise up, stay alert, and intercede with power and authority.”

By cultivating spiritual sensitivity, remaining vigilant, interceding with authority, being persistent, and building a community of like-minded believers, we can fulfill this crucial role effectively. Let us heed this call and become the watchmen God is looking for in this hour.
