In spiritual warfare, the concept of altars plays a significant role. An altar, in biblical terms, is a place of worship and sacrifice, where covenants are made and divine interactions occur. While godly altars are erected to honor God, there are also evil altars, established to serve demonic purposes. Understanding the danger of evil altars and how to confront them is crucial for believers seeking victory in spiritual battles.

What Are Evil Altars?

Evil altars are spiritual platforms where demonic forces are invited to operate. These altars can be physical structures or spiritual constructs where sacrifices are made to idols or false gods. In the Bible, we see instances where people erected altars to worship false gods, thus inviting spiritual bondage and curses.

Biblical Examples of Evil Altars

  1. The Altar of Baal: In the Old Testament, the Israelites often fell into idolatry by worshiping Baal, a Canaanite god. Gideon was called by God to tear down his father’s altar to Baal and build an altar to the Lord in its place (Judges 6:25-27). This act of destroying the evil altar was a significant step in breaking the hold of idolatry over the Israelites.
  2. The High Places: Throughout the history of Israel, kings who did evil in the sight of the Lord allowed altars on high places, where the people would worship other gods. These altars were a snare, leading the people away from the true worship of God and bringing about divine judgment (2 Kings 21:3-5).

Why Are Evil Altars Dangerous?

  1. Spiritual Bondage: Evil altars are gateways for demonic forces to operate in the lives of individuals, families, and even nations. They establish covenants that can bring curses, hindrances, and spiritual bondage. The Bible warns against setting up altars to other gods, as this provokes the Lord to anger and leads to spiritual downfall (Deuteronomy 7:5).
  2. Perpetuation of Sin: Altars to false gods often involve rituals and sacrifices that perpetuate sin and rebellion against God. They become strongholds of iniquity, influencing those who are connected to them through ungodly practices.
  3. Hindrance to God’s Blessings: Evil altars can block the flow of God’s blessings and favor. Just as Gideon’s family was under oppression until he tore down the altar of Baal, believers may experience delays and setbacks when evil altars are present in their spiritual environment

Evil altars represent a serious threat to the spiritual well-being of individuals and communities. They serve as points of contact for demonic activity and hinder the work of God. By recognizing the danger of these altars and taking proactive steps to dismantle them, believers can walk in freedom and experience the fullness of God’s promises.

Scripture encourages us to be vigilant and discerning, tearing down any altar that does not honor the true and living God, and building our lives on the foundation of His love and truth. As we do so, we can confidently stand against the schemes of the enemy and walk in the victory that Christ has secured for us.
