My Answer to Critics of the Prayer Movement

My Answer to Critics of the Prayer Movement

If God ALREADY KNOWS everything we need, then WHY DO WE PRAY?

I believe, and am sure you do as well, that:

·         God is Sovereign!!!

·         God is all-knowing

·         God is all-powerful

·         God is a loving Father

·         God knows all my needs!!!!

Now if that is yours and my truth, then why bother to pray!?  Because it would be a waste of time -right!?

There are several answers for why we should pray starting with – God commands it!

Jesus wanted the disciples and all believers to see God as their personal father (Our Father), so he gave them a spiritual template which we call the Lord’s Prayer – Matthew 6:9-15.

Jesus said to pray for His kingdom to come in order for Father God’s will to be done here on earth as it is in heaven. Wow! Wouldn’t that solve a lot of problems?

Jesus said to ask God to give us our daily bread (provision), to forgive our sins, to protect us from temptation, and deliver us evil.

And God said to Israel, “ If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:13-15).

Again, Why pray⁉️

If God is sovereign, then according to the simple instructions Jesus gave us in praying the Lord’s Prayer

we will receive : daily provision, forgiveness of sin, protection from temptation, and deliverance from evil.

Then according to Mat. 6:9, we are definitely not praying to benefit God, but for our benefit!!!

God in His sovereignty already knows what we need even before we ask for it –  So, again – why pray ⁉️

Because it delights Him. It demonstrates we need Him. Prayer is an act of humbling ourselves before His sovereignty! It displays our total love, devotion and adoration of our Father God and stirs our passion to be an ambassador of Him, our Father God‼️

We pray because it is fruitful to do so. The apostle James said, “The prayers of the righteous avail much!!” (James 5:16b) The prayers of righteous ones produce results!!

One of my favorite meditations when I pray is from Psalms 103:

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

We can depend upon God’s promises and much can be accomplished when we take time to pray.
