One of the greatest privileges of the believer is learning to live in the awareness of God’s presence. This is not a distant reality or an abstract concept—it’s the essence of our walk with Him. The presence of God is not a theological position we agree with; it’s the atmosphere we were designed to dwell in.
A Life Centered Around His Presence
Moses refused to move forward without God’s presence (Exodus 33:15). David longed for it more than his next breath (Psalm 27:4). Jesus Himself lived in an unbroken awareness of the Father (John 5:19). Why would we settle for anything less?
Yet, so often we compartmentalize God’s presence—limiting our awareness of Him to church services, prayer meetings, or moments of crisis. But what if we began to live like the Holy Spirit was our closest companion, our ever-present help, our consuming fire? What if we stopped treating His presence as a fleeting visitation and started living in the habitation of His glory?
Awareness: The Key to Abiding
Practicing the presence is not about striving; it’s about awareness. It’s about training our hearts to recognize the nearness of God in the mundane and the miraculous alike. Here’s how we cultivate that awareness:
- A Heart of Adoration – Worship is more than a song; it’s a posture. When we live in a place of constant gratitude and affection toward Him, our hearts remain tender to His presence.
- Sanctified Imagination – What you behold, you become. Meditating on the reality of Christ in you (Colossians 1:27) expands your capacity to experience Him daily.
- Holy Stillness – The world is loud, but God’s voice often comes in the whisper (1 Kings 19:12). Practicing silence before the Lord trains us to discern the subtle movements of His Spirit.
- Obedience Unlocks Encounter – The presence of God is not just a feeling; it’s a reality that deepens through obedience. The more we yield to Him, the more tangible His presence becomes.
- Praying Without Ceasing – This doesn’t mean repeating words all day long. It means living in a place where your heart is continually communing with Him, even in the middle of everyday tasks.
Living as a Dwelling Place
You don’t have to beg for what’s already been given. You are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). You carry His presence. You are a dwelling place for the Most High. The more we acknowledge Him, the more we experience Him. And the more we experience Him, the more we reflect Him to the world.
So today, take a deep breath. Close your eyes for a moment. Acknowledge that the Holy Spirit is with you—right now. His presence is not an external reality; it’s an internal dwelling. And as you learn to practice His presence, you’ll begin to walk in the reality that He has never left you and never will.
You are made to host His presence. Now, live like it.
