I heard the Lord say it is a “season of Leviathan’s rage.”
What does that mean? It starts with understanding the principality called Leviathan.
As I write in my book, The Spiritual Warrior’s Guide to Defeating Water Spirits, the Bible mentions Leviathan in Job 3, 40 and 41, but that’s not the only place this sea monster is found in Scripture. Isaiah points out Leviathan in Isaiah 27:1, noting the Lord will punish this “fleeing serpent” and “slay the dragon that is in the sea.” Psalm 74:14 speaks of God crushing the heads of Leviathan.” Psalm 104:26 points to Leviathan among the ships in the sea.
Leviathan is not a mythical sea creature used in Scripture as an allegory to prove a point. It is a principality such as Paul listed in Ephesians 6:12, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Understanding Leviathan’s Rage
We’re in a season of Leviathan’s rage. The Lord specifically used the word “rage.” It’s a strong word that points to violent and uncontrolled anger. Leviathan is a violent spirit that is fierce in battle. Consider Job 41:26-29: “The sword that reaches him cannot avail, nor the spear, the dart or the javelin. He regards iron as straw, bronze as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee; slingstones are turned into stubble for him. Clubs are regarded as stubble; He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.”
Rage also means “a fit of violent wrath.” Leviathan releases sudden, blinding attacks. “His sneezes flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning” (Job 41:18). This is a telling verse. Think about sneezing. According to Merriam-Webster, it means “to make a sudden violent spasmodic audible expiration of breath…” The Hebrew word “flash” actually means “boastful” in our lexicon. Leviathan makes sudden, violent, spasmodic boastful moves against his victims. The light he flashes blinds his victims with pride.
Leviathan is a spiritual terrorist. “Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth there is terror” (Job 41:14). The Leviathan spirit will bring terror and dread into your life. Terror is beyond fear—it’s a state of intense fear, according to Merriam-Webster. It causes anxiety.
Leviathan brings what our dictionary calls “violent and destructive acts (such as bombing) committed by groups in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands.” Leviathan essentially launched a series of terror attacks against Job—his family, his livestock, his body and his relationships.
The Power of Leviathan’s Rage
Let’s further explore the concept of rage. Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage against Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego and had them thrown into a fiery furnace (see Daniel 3:13). Leviathan releases words that burn.
Job 41:19-21 reads, “Out of his mouth go burning torches; sparks of fire leap forth. Out of his nostrils smoke goes forth as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes forth from his mouth.” Leviathan’s words will burn you and his smoke will cloud your vision and bring confusion.
The Pharisees were engraged against Jesus after he healed the man with the with the withered hand. Luke 6:10-12 says, “But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.” The Passion Translation puts it this way: “The room erupted with bitter rage, and from that moment on, the religious leaders plotted among themselves about how they might harm Jesus.”
Prayers Against Leviathan’s Rage
Make no mistake. In a season of Leviathan’s rage, this principality may be targeting you or those you love. This is a stiff-necked stubborn, prideful sprit that releases fear and crushing bewilderment. It carries a fragrance of death the discerning can small, and it leaves a visible trail.

Remember, you can’t take down Leviathan. The Bible warns about this over and over. But you can pray and guard yourself against this spirit’s twisted witchcraft attacks.
