Jesus did not open His end-times discourse with earthquakes. He did not open it with wars or famines or falling stars. He opened it with a warning about your mind.
"Take heed that no one deceives you" (Matthew 24:4).
That was His first instruction about the last days. Not "prepare for hardship." Not "stockpile supplies." Take heed. Guard your perception. Watch what you believe.
Why would the Lord lead with that? Because the enemy's primary end-times weapon is not violence. It's deception.
Deception Goes After Your Discernment First
The Greek word for deceive in Matthew 24 is planaō. It means to cause to wander, to lead astray, to send someone roaming off the path. It's where we get the word planet, the wandering star. Deception is often subtle. It reframes the truth. It moves you six degrees off course and lets time do the rest.
That's why the enemy often targets your discernment before he targets anything else in your life. If he can compromise your ability to judge between the holy and the profane, he doesn't need to attack your finances or your family. You'll walk into the trap yourself and call it a blessing.
Jesus warned that in the last days, "false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect" (Matthew 24:24). Signs and wonders. Not obvious counterfeits. Convincing ones.
Are you discerning by spectacle or by the Spirit?
Dull Senses Are the Devil's Open Door
Paul told Timothy plainly, "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons" (1 Timothy 4:1). Notice the sequence. They gave heed first. The departure came second.
The writer of Hebrews shows us the antidote: "But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil" (Hebrews 5:14).
The word exercised is gymnazō. It's athletic training language. Discernment is not a personality trait you were born with or without. It's a spiritual muscle. It develops by reason of use. Believers who feed on solid food and practice judging what they encounter grow sharp. Believers who live on spiritual milk and outsource their discernment to whoever has the biggest platform grow dull.

Test the Spirits and Refuse the Wandering
John gave the church a standing order: "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1).
Test is not the same as reject. Test is not cynicism dressed up as maturity. Cynicism is its own deception. The suspicious believer who refuses everything is just as deceived as the gullible one who receives everything. Both have stopped hearing God for themselves.
Real discernment listens, weighs it against the Word, and waits on the Holy Spirit before it moves.
You have that capacity. You were given the Spirit of truth. The anointing abides in you. Every voice sent to lead you off the path is answerable to the One who lives inside you.
So stop apologizing for the check in your spirit. Stop overriding the grief you feel when something is off. Stop calling discernment judgment because someone told you not to question them.
