False Views of Love Diluting the Church's Power
Years ago I was preaching a series of strong holiness messages in a particular church. After one of the meetings the pastor said something to me that I’ve never forgotten. “The Lord has dealt with me about preaching more on love than holiness,” he said.That statement didn’t sit well with me. I knew it was not accurate. Yet back then I didn’t know why. I pondered that pastor’s statement with my own thoughts that raced through my head. Is love more important than holiness? Are they different, or are they virtually the same? They have to be different, or we’d have a lot of redundancy in the Bible, I thought. But how are they different? Although I knew the pastor’s statement came from a lack of understanding true holiness, at that time I couldn’t thoroughly explain the difference.This pastor’s statement put an emphasis on love, which is of primary importance, while de-emphasizing holiness, which is not only God’s greatest attribute, but foundational to understanding man’s relationship to God. I walked away from that conversation knowing that this pastor’s view of holiness was not becoming or beautiful. I thought of how his view was probably shared by a multitude of believers, who have formed erroneous ideas and notions of holiness, due probably to their own negative experiences—like the cat who is afraid of water because of one negative experience of getting scalded by boiling water. Or of those who may have come from a background of legalism where do’s and don’ts were associated with holiness. These are among the reasons holiness has gotten a bad rap and is looked upon with a sort of disdain, as being primitive, outdated and just not culturally relevant. We need to realize, however, that negative experiences or unsound teaching does not nullify the real meaning, necessity, and beauty of God’s holiness.

On December 20th, 2018, I had a dream where I was driving to downtown Dallas. I was having trouble getting on the on ramp, as my car did not have enough horsepower to get on. I tried to find other avenues of entry but each posed a threat. Suddenly, a mighty angel began to descend from the heavens onto downtown Dallas.He had a fierce and war-like appearance. He was about 100 feet tall. As he descended he turned to look at me, I was facing downtown Dallas hovering over the skyline. He began to decree over me, and I had the strong impression that what he was speaking over me was being decreed over the city. I stood as a sign in this heavenly encounter.He began to thunder over me and Dallas, and when he did this I was overwhelmed by the authority and the power in his voice. I knew he was a prince warring angel, carrying an impartation from the spirit of prophecy. He seemed to embody the prophecy of God. The more He decreed, the louder his thunder grew.

I was sitting there, falling asleep, when my phone rang. On the other end of the line was R. Loren Sandford, the son of the late John Sandford. Loren began to tell me that he had left a gift for me in Cindy's living room closet, on the top shelf. He then told me that what he had left for me was the watch he had inherited from his father and was now passing on to me, a Panerai Luminor – 47mm (I was able to see the exact make and model of the watch in the dream, strap color and all). He told me that it wasn't exactly working because it needed a new battery.I responded to him with such gratitude and excitement because this was an extravagant gift, running or not. I told him that I didn't think I could accept it because of the high cost attached to this watch. He responded with, “Well, it is only $9,100 dollars” (the watch actually costs this amount in the natural). I thanked him again and ended the call. Right as I started to admire the watch, Cindy walked into her living room with a bag full of gifts for me and said, “Good, now that you've received that gift that Loren left for you, you can get these as well.” The dream ended with me tearing into the gifts that Cindy had given me, all while wearing the, now working, watch.

21 Contrasts Between Prophetic Edification and Manipulation
The Bible teaches us that true prophecy edifies the church and also exalts the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthian’s 12:3-7; and 14:3,4). However, where there are true prophetic gifts, there are also counterfeits and/or the wrong use of God-given gifts. For example, in the Scriptures we see that the prophet Balaam tried to use his gift for financial gain (Numbers 22:21-39). We see in this narrative of Balaam, that even though his motives weren’t godly, he still had a bona fide prophetic gift.The bottom line is, all prophetic gifts have to be framed by the intent, the motives and ultimate purpose of the Word of God. As someone who has participated in prophetic ministry since the early 1980’s, I’ve seen this gift used for both edification and manipulation.

Prophecy: Shaking the Tree of Leadership
Many years ago the Lord told me that, for me, self-promotion was illegal. I’ve wrestled with the implications of that word from Him ever since. For the sake of profitability for the publishers who produce my books, I’m required to do some promotion of my own, but there are limits. I’ve pondered what the apostle Paul had to say in Philippians 3:8 when he spoke of all that he had given up. He wrote: “More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ…” “Rubbish” in the original Greek is actually a rather strong profanity that illustrates the depth of what the apostle wanted to communicate about the wonder of really knowing and experiencing Jesus. For this, he would pay any price.

I can remember it like it was yesterday. I heard a knock at my door very late at night. It was a young pastor friend of mine who was seeking shelter because the police were looking for him to arrest him. His crime: helping a young woman escape her Muslim parents who allegedly wanted to kill her for converting to Christianity.This young lady was protected and would go on to fight her parents in court and had to suffer many trials for her conversion. She and I later became very good friends. As the years went on and life became busy, I lost contact with her (mostly due to her trying to protect herself and others). After a few years of separation, while watching Christian television, I rediscovered my friend, Rifqa Bary. She had matured into a vibrant young woman, and I watched her boldly share her story of this on a national TV show in the USA called The 700 Club! In spite of her life still being under assault, she shared on the program how she escaped Islam and how God is now using her testimony.
Jesus’ Names in Revelation: The Lion and the Lamb
“One of the most interesting contrasts of names in Revelation occurs in chapter five, where in the same context I am called both ‘the Lion of the tribe of Judah’ and ‘a Lamb’ (5:5-6). If this combination sounds paradoxical in English, it is even more so in Greek. The word used here for ‘lamb’ is a diminutive and a term of endearment. It is the sort of word a child might use to describe a cute and cuddly baby lamb. And yet, this title is used here in the context of the regal majesty of the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the ruling tribe of Israel.“John here brings together two titles with different emphases to give his readers a fuller understanding of who I am. As the Lion, I am everything the Jews expected in their Messiah. I was the son of David who would rule over Caesar. I was the One coming to establish the kingdom of God on earth. But I was also the Messiah who came to give My life a ransom for many. As such, I am the sacrificial yearling lamb. But I am a lamb with a difference: this lamb had seven horns. A horn was a symbol of power in the Old Testament, and seven was a number of completeness in Scripture. This is the lamb with the fullness of the strength and power of the lion.
