Judge Roy Moore is traveling the nation to educate Christian leaders about our responsibility to serve as the conscious of the nation in our day.
No one has to tell you it’s a presidential election year. But maybe someone does need to tell you what to do in the face of political battles that could arise in the years ahead if Christians don’t stand up and make God’s will known to our government. That’s why Judge Roy Moore, former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, launched Project Jeremiah.
Judge Moore was removed from his seat on Alabama’s High Court in 2003 because he boldly stood up for our inalienable right to acknowledge God. Despite orders from a federal judge, he refused to remove the 10 Commandments from the Alabama state court house. Little did Judge Moore know God was about to call him to a new ministry: Project Jeremiah.
Project Jeremiah is a program to encourage and educate pastors around the country to stand up
for righteousness and gain a better understanding of the First Amendment, Separation of Church and State, and the crucial role the pulpit has played as the “conscience of the nation” throughout American history. Judge Moore drew the program’s name from Jeremiah 2:8: “The priests said not, ‘Where is the Lord?’ and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.”
“Many pastors do not understand the sovereign jurisdiction over law and government. They don’t know what belongs to Caesar and what doesn’t, but it’s necessary for pastors to understand these issues,” says Judge Moore, founder of the Foundation for Moral Law, a Montgomery, Ala.-based non-profit with a mission to restore the knowledge of God in law and government and to acknowledge and defend the truth that man is endowed with God-given rights. “They’ve been taught in universities or seminars the false separation of civil life from their religious obligations,” he continues. “I’m speaking the truth of Scripture and law.”
The way Judge Moore sees it, the American Civil Liberties Union and other liberal organizations have taken advantage of the Christian community’s ignorance and apathy far too long. Freedom of conscience secured by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is being taken from us as the public acknowledgment of God is stripped from our public square. We can ill afford to sit quietly by when the future of our country, our children, and our posterity is at stake, Judge Moore says, and he is intent on making sure we don’t.
“Today, everything about a Supreme Being is deemed unconstitutional. But it’s not really about the 10 Commandments. It’s not about prayer in schools. It’s not about symbols on city seals. It’s about acknowledging the sovereignty of the Almighty,” says Judge Moore, who holds a Juris Doctor degree and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. “Satan hasn’t changed his modus operandi. He works through leadership and when our seminaries, our law schools, and our media all portray that acknowledging the sovereignty of God is wrong, we see Romans 1:21-22 happen.”
Romans 1:21-22 says, “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” Judge Moore is trying to dispel the darkness with the light of God’s Word through Project Jeremiah.
Project Jeremiah sponsors and promotes free conferences for preachers across America to explain the truth of God’s sovereignty over our country. Judge Moore explains the truth about “Separation of Church and State,” “Rule of Law,” and obedience to civil government from a biblical, historical, and legal perspective. Pastors and preachers learn about the unique biblical and legal relationship between God’s law and the U.S. Constitution. Judge Moore hopes to restore a proper understanding of God to the preachers of our land.
“The seminar was inspirational, informative and challenged all of us to stand up for what our forefathers stood for and intended for us as a nation from the very beginning,” says Pastor Rob Parsons of Longview Metro Church in Longview, Texas. “Judge Moore was used mightily of God to stir, challenge and call us into accountability for the biblical foundation of America.”
Judge Moore is grateful for pastors that are grabbing hold of the message. But there is still work to be done to break what he calls a deception that comes from ignorance. Judge Moore points the finger of responsibility at the leaders of the Body of Christ, many of whom do not understand the practical application of the First Amendment. The First Amendment prohibits the federal legislature from making laws that infringe on the freedom of speech, religion and the press, or the right to petition and peacefully assemble. But not many pastors, he says, understand how to walk that out.
“If I asked you if it’s a good idea for a man to marry his daughter you would say that’s revolting. But if you don’t have a standard, who’s to say that’s revolting? It’s the standard for a man to marry a woman and have children. It’s the law of nature. When you disregard the law of nature, a man can marry another man,” Judge Moore explains, noting that our nation is founded on the law of nature, which promises life, liberty and the right to own property straight out of the Book of Genesis.
Again, Judge Moore charges the leaders of the Church to respond. In effect, he’s calling for a reformation. He reminds that during Martin Luther’s time Church leadership distorted the truth of God’s Word. The Bible was taught by clergy who interpreted it incorrectly. When Martin Luther read the Bible himself he had an epiphany that led to the Protestant Reformation. Judge Moore sees a Church today that has regressed, and needs a revelation.
“We believe everything we hear from a group of nine men and women on the Supreme Count of the United States,” Judge Moore says. “In the face of pure hypocrisy, they open their courts with ‘God save the United States.’ Then they say you can’t recognize the sovereign God. It’s the way of error. They are so confused they don’t know what they are doing. I’m waiting for the day when they stop acknowledging God at all. They’ll stop it and not tell anybody, and they’ll think nobody will notice it.”
Judge Moore is concerned for the nation and the Church he loves. He recalls how quickly the Roman Empire fell when it deteriorated from within, and contends that America is falling from within – right before our very eyes. Man is a fallen creature, he says, and the Constitution was written to keep down the power of man. That’s why America doesn’t have kings, he continues, but America does have nine men and women wearing black robes. Judge Moore is concerned these nine people are ruling the land from the bench. We have made Supreme Court justices our gods, he argues, and if we continue down this road we will no longer maintain the core values of our nation.
“When the spirit of the law is abandoned and theoretical opinions of individuals are allowed to control its meaning, we no longer have a Constitution,” Judge Moore says. “We are under a government of individual men who have the power to declare what the Constitution means. When judges start ruling by the seat of their emotions and not by law, then we don’t have a Constitution. We don’t have the rule of law. We have the rule of man instead of the rule of God.”
