How To Care For A Family Member With A Mental Health Condition

How To Care For A Family Member With A Mental Health Condition

The composed demure and glow which comes with maturity is the opposite of the turmoil going on inside Jessica Ojhara. When she begins to speak you see a woman who has bottled up a lot of pain that has come with the challenges of mothering a mentally challenged child and husband.

Her family is one of those affected by mental illness as reflected in the global situation of mental health. According to the World Health Organization 2001, it is estimated that 1 in 4 families has at least one member currently suffering from a mental disorder. Mental disorders accounted for 10.5% of the global burden disease in 1990. They increased to 12% in 2000 and are expected to reach 15% by 2020.

According to the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) of 2005/2006; of all the households in the country 58% had at least one person with a mental disorder.

In May, we marked World Mental Health Day in Uganda by focussing on how people can address mental health before symptoms are severe thus prolonging the recovery process. Jessica’s contribution cannot be ignored. Her journey puts a face to the challenges of mothering a mentally challenged child; this is not just a statistic.

Jessica’s relationship with Emmanuel
Jessica, the sole breadwinner for over 30 years, has made many sacrifices to nurture Emmanuel Ojhara, her 27-year-old son. The mother of 7, became Emmanuel’s caregiver from the time he turned 18-years-old, when he became ill. It has taken years of longsuffering, love and kindness.

“I remember it started, one day, when he was very quiet. I would talk to him he would keep quiet. He had a lot of saliva in his mouth. When he would spit, it was like a lot of water.

One day I came from the office and when I asked for Emmanuel they told me he had left home. I looked for him and even went to the lake but l did not find him. I could not sleep that night. The following morning at 6.00 I saw him walk past our home. When I called out to him he ran away. I told his brothers to run after him until they got him,” she explains with anguish and pain.

So, when did she know that Emmanuel was mentally ill? “When he started holding conversations with people we did not see, while laughing, l did not want to believe he was mentally ill. He was admitted for three months to the Butabika Hospital with his father at the same time.

But the medicine has not helped him because he does not talk unless it is with these invisible people or when he wants food. Emmanuel has no friends. He has a problem with his memory especially when it comes to remembering places,” she observes.

As a child Emmanuel was talkative and active. He was friendly, the kind who would prepare a cup of tea for visitors, especially when his mother was not around.

However, before Jessica noticed any problem her son’s teachers complained that he would play with other children in the park instead of going to school.

Emmanuel dropped out of secondary school. Since his father suffers from schizophrenia, this probably contributed to his illness.

Jessica recalls, in her early years of marriage while her husband worked in Zambia, he had a relapse and became violent. He wanted to throw their children through the window, which terrified her. While her husband studied in Britain, he fell ill and she had to run away from home with her son because he threatened violence.

“I ran to a friend’s home. I knocked at their door incessantly, when they opened, I collapsed in their arms. They grabbed the baby first when he dropped from my arms,” she says with desperation. By this time she had three children (Emmanuel is her fifth born).

This has been her life. Jessica recalls incidents when her husband would chase her and the children while wearing only his underwear and they would be the talk of the neighbourhood in Entebbe where they still reside.

She feels this could have affected her son. Emmanuel, sometimes cries for long periods. “He can cry for the whole day and I also cry while holding him to my chest. I tell him that Jesus loves him and has a plan for his life.

Sometimes he gets violent, then I calm down and do not insist on anything. When he is aggressive I hear it in his tone when he refers to me as ‘you woman’.

There is a time he was shaking uncontrollably when I called him he got angry and started chasing me. Fortunately, the other boys were there so they looked out for me,” she explains with a pained facial expression.

“I continue to show him love. I tell him that everything is going to be okay. But I am in trouble, l do not have anything. For instance, for Easter he asked me for trousers but I could not afford any.” Jessica works as a secretarial administrator, whose salary is usually delayed.

How do Emmanuel’s siblings cope?

“I have told [Emmanuel’s siblings] not to blame him for any action or reaction. I encourage them to love, serve and comfort him. I always tell them to be near him when he talks to ‘other things’ to be nice to him and support him. Sometimes they watch television with him. They have managed,” she observes.

Dennis Ojhara, 33 years, is Emmanuel’s older brother. He explains, “Mummy has done a good job of mothering our brother. Mum told us to keep watching dad and Emma. When they started taking medicine they were able to rest.”

Dennis explains that their mother is very committed because she follows up on Emmanuel even though it has been tough. She has zeal. Jessica cares for her husband and son at home which is touching. He observes that many people would have given up on such family members.

“She has been very strong,” David Ojhara, 23-year-old University student, Emmanuel’s younger brother describes his mother. “She always has a positive attitude and believes that everything will be alright. She believes that Emmanuel will not always be like this. She pushes him to be involved as part of the family.”

Emmanuel’s perspective

Emmanuel sleeps long hours because the medication sedates him. He prefers to keep indoors rather than socialize with friends. Though Jessica was weary, Emmanuel talked to me.

When Flair magazine, asked him over the telephone what he thinks of his mother regarding how she has taken care of him, he responds in a slurred tone, “I thank God for her for caring of me.”

So, there is hope. With the love he is getting from his family, one day Emmanuel’s story will change. With divine intervention and consistent love from a caring and committed mother, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Caregiver coping tips
– Seek counseling;
– Join a support group and share your experiences. For instance, Heartsounds Uganda, a non-governmental organization run and managed by mental health service users also creates such a platform;
– Read widely on the mental disorder so you can look after your loved one better;
– Love the affected person; and
– Do not be ashamed because mental illness is like other diseases.

Prophetic Dream Points to Expect Holy Ghost Promotions

Prophetic Dream Points to Expect Holy Ghost Promotions

I have had a number of dreams over the last few months which suggest to me that many in the Body are about to experience promotion in the Holy Spirit. I don’t know about you, but if the Lord has more for my life than what I am living already, then I want it. Whatever He wants me to do to get to that promotion, I will do it because I don’t want to miss one of the gates that He has for my life.

Dreams of Vehicles and Personal Ministries

I saw in a dream a number of people who were driving vehicles. The vehicles were getting older and needed to be replaced. Two of the people actually got new cars but one person didn’t bother to change. To me this is a picture of what God wants to do in your life. A car in a dream can represent a personal ministry. It can represent your business or what it is you do. Your job, your profession, etc. A small car can represent a small, personal ministry that God wants to do in your life and a larger car is a bigger endeavor.

Many times people will have dreams where they see themselves on large ships or flying in a large aircraft. This can often mean that God is going to advance your life through a bigger ministry. I understood in my dream that the person who did not replace their car lost an opportunity. He/she was being set-up for advancement, but for one reason or another he/she ended up missing the change that God had for their life.

Don’t Miss Your Open Doors!

When I have a dream like this, I usually pray that God will help me to not miss my promotion. I ask Him to deal with my heart. If there are people that He wants me to forgive or areas in my own life that He wants me to repent of, then I am open to it. I want my heart to be ready so that when His doors open, I am in the place that I need to be to walk through.

I pray for you right now and ask the Lord to open doors for your life and to heal your heart and emotions so that you won’t miss the opportunities that He has in store for you in this season. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to appear before the Father at the end of time only to hear Him say, “I gave you a talent that you didn’t use. You buried it beneath the sand.” I want to hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. I gave you 2 talents and you multiplied them by 2 more. Welcome into your reward.”

The Reward of Peace and the Presence of God

My motivation is to be filled with the peace and presence of God. I want to accomplish His will so that I remain in the place of His presence. I don’t care what I have to face to remain there either. I will do everything I can to stay in my Father’s arms. There is no place like His presence. I know what it is like to not serve God. I know what it is like to not have His peace in my heart. So now at this time in my life I choose to do His will to remain in peace.

The reward of peace in my heart is greater than anything else this world could offer. It is better than houses, cars, or money. It is better than traveling the nations or getting the best education. It is better than rising through the ranks of a corporation or a government agency. Just to have His peace in my heart I became like the man in the Bible who sold everything so that he would be able to obtain the pearl of great price, the Savior of his soul (Matthew 13:45-46).

High Towers and Spiritual Promotions

In the second dream, I saw that I was walking into high office in the spirit. In the dream it looked like the kind of office that you would expect a vice president of a bank to have in a major city. It was in a high floor (which is representative of Christ; He is our high tower). It was pristine, clean and very modern. When I walked through that door there was a person who was really upset that I was being given this office. He figured that office was for him, but I said to him, “No, this is my office.”

I believe that dream applies to me, but I also believe it applies to you. You may be reading this now and in your heart you sense that there is a promotion that God has for your life. You can feel it. You can taste it. He has been speaking to you and telling you that He is about to open a very effective door for you. I believe that door is about to open.

Allow Him to Course Correct Your Path

Allow Him to be the King of your life. Let Him bring you to the place that He has in store for you. Let Him trim your heart of the things that are not right. Let Him be the amazing gardener that He is. He wants you to be prepared for the season ahead. Hebrews 12:6 says, “…because the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastens everyone He accepts as His son.” He may rebuke, but it’s to get ready for the blessings He has in store.

Don’t reject the Lord’s correction. It really is like a course correction in an aircraft. Sometimes it only takes a little change to bring you thousands of miles into a different place. God may be speaking to you about something that is small in your life. If you let Him into that spot it will likely result in an amazing adventure.

Consider It Pure Joy

There will be those who will not like that you are going through doors that they feel are for them. The truth is, those doors could be for them. There is no lack in God. What He does for one He will do for another. You may experience some persecution and rejection as a result of moving to your new place, but let yourself be promoted anyway. Consider it pure joy when you faces trials of many kinds (James 1:2-4). You may have to leave some folks behind who are not willing to go with you. Let them go and you will meet new folks who will are prepared to walk with you in your new season.

I know you can do it. All things are possible for those who just obey the Lord. It is His power and authority that opens the way before you. I pray today that you will see how easy it really is. I pray that you will go adventure!

Prophets Declaring a Glory Wave and Three-Month Purge

Prophets Declaring a Glory Wave and Three-Month Purge

We usually begin each New Year with 40 days of fasting and prayer. In early December, while seeking the Lord about our upcoming fast, the opening phrase of an old hymn suddenly sprung up from within my spirit.

“Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee…”

Over and over again, the words of that song flowed from within me, becoming my prayer of repentance and surrender.

I then heard the Lord speak the instruction given to His people, Israel, just before crossing over the Jordan River (in the harvest season) to possess their inheritance: “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you” (Joshua 3:5).

This call to consecration was actually made each time God desired to release a powerful move of His Spirit among His people. I sensed this invitation was not for me alone. The Lord was asking me, as He did with Joshua, to release a corporate call to consecration as we cross over into this new year of power and great harvest.

Confirming the Call to Consecration

Just days after receiving this personal word and public assignment, a prophet came seeking to meet with us to deliver a word from the Lord. He began to share a vision the Lord had given him of a great wave of revival, glory and reformation. “The big one’s coming! The big one’s coming!” he said repeatedly, “And I see you riding the crest of that wave! Just like a surfer out in the ocean, watching and waiting to catch the big one, you are to burn the midnight oil! Roll up your sleeves for spiritual things! Study past revivals to prepare for the big one that’s coming.”

Around the same time, I (Melissa) was contacted by my dear friend, Dehavilland Ford, who leads a ministry called 818 The Sign. Their mandate is to raise up an Isaiah 8:18 generation: “Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for signs and wonders…” She shared a dream given to one of her ministry leaders.

In this dream, I (Melissa) phone called them and began shouting with urgency, “818, meet me in the secret place!”

The Lord is announcing His wave of revival and glory, coming with signs, wonders and a harvest greater than any we’ve yet to see. God desires that we walk in the fullness of all He’s destined for us. He’s calling us to meet Him in the secret place of consecration so we’ll be ready to ride His wave.

The 3-Month Purge

Around the same time, Melissa heard God’s call to consecration, the Lord was speaking to me (Anthony) about a coming season of cleansing. He brought to my remembrance the events that took place one ordinary day in 2006.

Melissa and I were students at Christ for the Nations Institute, a Bible college in Dallas, TX. Students and staff had enjoyed another great morning in worship and intimate moments with Jesus. As the school director got up to make the transition and release us to our classrooms, a guy on the front row raised his hand and asked if he could say something publicly. The director agreed and called him up to the mic.

“I want to publicly repent to my sister sitting next to me,” he confessed. “I’ve been looking at you with eyes of lust and I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m a married man but I’ve been looking at you wrongly. Please forgive me.” The atmosphere shifted. Travail and repentance hit the entire auditorium of 1,200 students.

That one public confession opened the door to hours of public confessions, deliverances and great freedom.School began at 8 am. and was supposed to be over by noon, but this all went on well past 5 pm. that day. It was an invitation to holiness, the doorway to revival.

“Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
And who may stand in His holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood
And has not sworn deceitfully.
He shall receive a blessing from the Lord
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
This is the generation of those who seek Him,
Who seek Your face—even Jacob. Selah.” (Psalm 24:3-6)

I hear Heaven declaring the first quarter of 2019 as “The 3-Month Purge.” The Lord is calling us to rend our hearts before Him. He is calling us to lay aside our pride and arrogance and let His purifying light into our dark places. Our ministry can be bringing life to many, while the minister is slowly dying spiritually. This cannot be.

There is a great release of power and an incredible harvest of souls coming in 2019, and the Lord desires that clean sons and daughters steward what He is putting forth.

This may not be “popular” talk in today’s modern Church landscape, but the hour we’re in requires a level of consecration, the likes of which we’ve not yet seen.

“‘Yet even now,’ declares the Lord,
‘Return to Me with all your heart,
And with fasting, weeping and mourning;
And rend your heart and not your garments.’
Now return to the Lord your God,
For He is gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness
And relenting of evil.” (Joel 2:12-13)

Whether you are new in the Lord or have walked with Him for many years, there are greater depths of consecration God is inviting you into. It’s time to burn the midnight oil. Roll up your sleeves. Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow, the Lord will do wonders among you.

Manny Pacquiao After Winning The WBA Fight: “Thank You Lord For The Victory!”

Once again, the world-renowned, professional boxing champion, Manny Pacquiao, defended the WBA Welterweight title in a fight against Adrien Broner.

Last Saturday night, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Manny dominated Adrien throughout the 12 rounds in the ring. During the fight, Adrien found it hard to keep up with Manny especially when he used aggression and speed over him. Adrien could hardly throw a punch to counter back.

According to the CBS Sports report, Manny snapped out over 70 jabs in the first three rounds, cruising to easy wins as he avoided Adrien’s rare attempts at counters. He also successfully launched a punch on Adrien with his left hand in the 5th and 9th rounds—which is known to have great strength since he is a left-handed person.

In the end, by a unanimous decision, the Filipino boxing champion victoriously retained the WBA Welterweight Title. Manny then posted on his official Facebook Page crediting God for his triumph.

“Thank you, Lord for the victory! Thank you to my wife Jinkee, my family, friends, and fans from all over the world. Thank you to everyone who watched my fight tonight. Thank you for all your support. I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of you. May God bless you all!”

Aside from being a prominent world boxing champion, Manny is also known as a man after God’s own heart. After hearing God’s audible voice, he became a changed man, leaving all his vices behind. Since then, a huge part of his profits go to those less fortunate. He has built homes for the homeless, given provision to the poor, and has given millions of jobs to people in his country through the businesses he has built. Perhaps, Manny acknowledges that it was God who has given him all these things and so he stewards what his gifts, in light of his fear of God.

Maybe, winning the fight wasn’t only for him, but for every person who will be blessed with his generosity. For this has always been the will of God.

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2)

Kathi Pelton Prophesies It’s a Time to Roll Away the Stone

Kathi Pelton Prophesies It’s a Time to Roll Away the Stone

On the morning of January 1st, 2019, I awoke and looked at my phone to see the time. It was 4:44 am. When I saw this, something quickened in my spirit and I knew I needed to pray and pay attention to what the Lord desired to say.

The number four Biblically represents a demarcation point in creation. On the fourth day the sun, moon, and stars were created, separating day from night and providing light for both. There are also four separate seasons in a year providing a demarcation of changes throughout each year. The fourth commandment is to rest and honor the Sabbath, which is a demarcation in time each week, where we go from active work to focused rest.

This new year (2019) is a demarcation year that signals a time and season, shift or change. It is also a year that God will reveal great light in the day and great light in the night (darkness). His light comes from the place of His perfect love, and perfect love cast out fear. Fear of darkness will be met by the light of His perfect love, and that love will cast our fears that have gripped the hearts of so many.

A Time of Rolling Away the Stone

Immediately upon waking on 1/1/2019 at 4:44, I went to my Bible and opened it. As I did, the Spirit asked me to look down and read the page that I had opened to. These are the first words that I read in 2019:

“Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away the reproach (captivity/slavery) of Egypt from you.’ So the place has been called Gilgal to this day. On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.” (Joshua 5:9-12 emphasis mine)

In the Hebrew language, Gilgal means “circle of stones.” We see the “reproach of Egypt” (captivity) rolled away just as the stone was rolled away from the tomb of Jesus when He was resurrected. Light suddenly emerged out of darkness; both the darkness of captivity and the darkness of the tomb. Both events are “demarcation” moments that changed history by rolling away a stone.

Joshua 5:9-12 also speaks of leaving a forty-year time of wilderness living, where the Israelites survived on daily manna for their provision rather than the fruits and harvest of the Promised Land. Suddenly manna was no longer needed and the Israelites enjoyed their first meal from the crops of Canaan. This marked the end of the time of manna, stagnation, and wilderness survival; they were moving into the land of their inheritance.Though there were many enemies occupying their land, as they kept the Lord’s commands and instructions, they would overthrow their enemies in order to possess and occupy their promise.

I truly believe that this is a picture of the time that we have now entered. We have crossed over and are having our hearts circumcised. The time of being idle has come to a close and the reproach of captivity is suddenly rolled away. We are getting our first tastes of the riches of Canaan.

The Old Must Pass Away

The Body of Christ is being asked to walk forward as one people; one family that follows all of the Lord’s commands and instructions. In doing this we will conquer enemies, tear down strongholds, and occupy lands of long-awaited promises.

The rewards and victories ahead are remarkable and yet we must be sober to the truth that the penalty for not following His ways and instructions will be costly. We must walk as one army, as one family, without jostling for position or moving according to the flesh. This is why it is imperative to allow the circumcision of our hearts to take place as we enter this new season.

The old must pass away and we must all ascend the mountain of the Lord together to meet God face-to-face. There, we will receive wisdom and instructions of how to proceed while coming daily into intimacy and nurturing His presence.
“Then he said to Him, ‘If Your presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.’ So the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.'” (Exodus 33:15-17)

As we meet with God and follow His instructions, our enemies will be struck with fear as they see the miracles and victories that the Lord will do through His people.

Scriptures for the Time and Season We Are Entering

I conclude with a number of Scripture verses that the Lord has highlighted to me for this time and season. I encourage you to read them, pray into them, and carry them with you in your heart and mind:

“Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by and every vision comes to nothing’? Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to put an end to this proverb, and they will no longer quote it in Israel.’ Say to them, ‘The days are near when every vision will be fulfilled.'” (Ezekiel 12:22-23)

“I am the LORD your God: Walk in My statutes, keep My judgments, and do them…” (Ezekiel 20:19)

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18)

“For if you carefully keep all these commandments which I command you to do – to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, and to hold fast to Him – then the Lord will drive out all these nations from before you, and you will dispossess greater and mightier nations than yourselves. Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the River Euphrates, even to the Western Sea, shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put the dread of you and the fear of you upon all the land where you tread, just as He has said to you.” (Deuteronomy 11:22-25)

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the Blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:5-9)

Take time to meditate on these verses. His Word is the lamp that lights the way of our paths ahead. Let us hold fast to His written and spoken words as we move forward to possess the land.

Christian Worker Fired By Hotel For Refusing To Work On Sundays Receives $21.5 Million

Christian Worker Fired By Hotel For Refusing To Work On Sundays Receives $21.5 Million

Marie Jean Pierre is a 60-year-old Haitian immigrant who was fired by the Conrad Hotel in Miami, Florida because she refuses to work on Sundays. But rather than falling into financial ruin, the Lord blessed her faithfulness.

Marie washed dishes at the Conrad for almost 10 years. At first, the hotel, aware of her involvement in the Soldiers of Christ Church, exempted her from working on Sundays so she could attend services.

But in 2015, the hotel’s kitchen manager, George Colon, assigned Marie to work every Sunday. Her co-worker tried to help Marie by trading shifts for several weeks but her boss demanded her to show-up for her assigned shifts.

The devout Christian and diligent employee who gave her job a decade of her service was then fired.

“I love God. No, I can’t work on Sunday because Sunday, I honor God,” Marie boldly said in her interview with NBC 6 South Florida.

Because of what happened, Marie decided to sue the Conrad, managed by HEI Hotels & Resorts, in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida in May 2017.

“Defendant retaliated against Plaintiff by, among other things, creating a hostile work environment for Plaintiff, reprimanding Plaintiff for her religious beliefs, and terminating Plaintiff,” Marie’s lawsuit stated.

After the case hearing, a federal jury in Miami demanded the hotel to pay Marie $36,000 for lost wages, $500,000 for emotional anguish, and $21 million in punitive damages, Miami Herald Stated.

“But this was not about money. This was about sending a message to other corporations, whether big or small, whatever size you are, if you’re gonna take the blood and sweat of your workers, you better accommodate them or let them at least believe in their religious beliefs.” Marie’s lawyer shared.

Aside from being a faithful servant of God, Marie is also a missionary.

This eye-opening story reminds us not only to put God first in our lives, but to live by our convictions. Christians need to show to the world that the God we serve deserves all the honor and glory in our lives.

How Actress Melissa Hart Went From ‘Teenage Witch’ To Spiritual Warfare For Jesus

How Actress Melissa Hart Went From ‘Teenage Witch’ To Spiritual Warfare For Jesus

Being a Hollywood star can bring a lot of criticism into your life, especially when you are boldly open about your faith. The media will do whatever they can to bring attention to your name. They put up headlines for the sake of big news and couldn’t care less about the truth. That’s why it’s no surprise that most Christian celebrities receive backlash from people. Recently, the American actress Melissa Joan Hart experienced the same criticism.

Apparently, in an interview with Paula Faris on the ABC network’s “Journeys of Faith” podcast, Melissa opened up about her journey with God. She talked about her faith and how she was led to Jesus Christ and grew a closer relationship with Him. For this reason, she received a lot of judgment from others.

As Christians it is so exciting to watch others come to Christ.
For Melissa, it is special because she has an enormous platform for spreading God’s word. However, for unbelievers, it’s undesirable and misunderstood. No wonder haters blasted her on social media, calling her names, and cursing her for what she had said about Jesus being the way to Heaven. Most of the comments from her critics aren’t fit to reprint. She was also accused of being anti-semitic because she believes what Christians believe.

In the interview, Melissa revealed that growing up, she was Catholic while her husband was raised Baptist. Over time, as a married couple, they searched for unity in their pursuit of faith in Christ, and they found a church where they could grow together. Since then, both Melissa and her husband have attended Bible studies in Connecticut and decided to put her kids in Christian preschool.

She mentioned how she loved being around Christians; praying and growing together through studying Scripture.

Just like any other Christian, she’s also struggled with doubt, but, she said, “Then I close my eyes and tap into the Holy Spirit and let Him speak to me. And you feel that warmth and you feel that change.”

Melissa never discoursed about her prior acting role as a teenage witch, however, she revealed how she engages in what the Bible calls spiritual warfare whenever she senses fear and darkness. She shared how she could powerfully cast that fear and darkness out by speaking in faith out loud.

“When I’m in my house and I’m afraid if I’m by myself or my husband’s asleep before me, and I get afraid and I’m walking the halls and you just get that creepy feeling like goosebumps up your back like something’s not right, I just say out loud, you know, ‘This is a Jesus home, Satan’s not welcome here, get out, this is a home for Jesus,’” Melissa said.

“Immediately… you feel that darkness go away,” she added.
“One of the great things that I’ve learned is that darkness is just the absence of light and without Jesus you just have this darkness and then Jesus is the light… so not having Jesus in your life just leaves this void,” she further explained.

10 Common Unbiblical Beliefs in the Contemporary Church

10 Common Unbiblical Beliefs in the Contemporary Church

As an observer and participant in the broader Body of Christ since 1978, I have heard many things communicated that I deem un-biblical. Many of these teachings are so commonly believed and or are assumed that the average Christian embraces them without examining the Scriptures.

The following are some of the more common erroneous beliefs:

1. Salvation and a decision for Christ at an altar are the same

One of the most common misconceptions I have observed in the church today is the fact that folks think that if a person repeats “the sinner’s prayer” or responds to an altar call they are “saved”. This is problematic since we may be giving false hope to the respondent by reassuring them of their salvation when in fact they may not really be saved!

Also, nowhere in the bible does it say that merely saying words ensures salvation. Furthermore, the altar call is a modern development in the Evangelical church that arose out of the methodology employed by evangelists who appealed to the masses to come to the altar to receive Christ (or to “walk up the sawdust trail!). While there is nothing wrong with this approach that identifies those who want to give their life to Christ (so people can get their names, pray with them and follow them up) – it is not the same as salvation.

Scripture is clear that both the heart and the mouth have to confess Jesus is Lord (see Romans 10:9,10) and Paul the apostle regularly echoed the word of John the Baptist when he said to bring forth fruit proving your repentance (see Acts 26:20, Matthew 3:8). Hence, making an emotionally motivated “decision” to ask Jesus in your life is a good step, but a truly converted person will bear fruit proving they really gave their life over to Jesus. (See also 1 John 3:9.) I.E. I used to say that “hundreds got saved tonight” when I was referring to an altar call response of masses of people -now I merely say – hundreds made “decisions for Christ” since, after all these years I am now very careful to distinguish between a “decision” and a “conversion” experience.

2. Worship is just singing songs

I have learned that the mere singing of words to a song doesn’t amount to worship. Jesus also said that people can honor Him with their lips while their hearts are far from Him (see Mark 7:6-8).

True worship includes blessing the Lord with all your soul (see Psalm 103) which implies that your whole heart, mind and soul—your whole being—is willingly bowing before the Lordship of Christ while adoring and worshipping the Godhead. (See Revelation 4.)

True worship also implies obedience which is why Jesus said, “If you love me you will obey my commandments” (see John 14:15). Consequently, I have known many persons either on worship teams and or people in church who—during the worship segment of the church service—displayed exuberant praise and worship, yet their private life was anything but submitted to God!

3. Repentance is crying at the altar

I have seen countless people making “altar calls” week after week crying as they came up. The average believer thinks that this is a sign of repentance; however, the word repentance has to do with a mindset change; a change of thinking, more than an emotional experience. I have learned that unless a person changes the way they think about God, their hearts will never be transformed by His power. Even Esau could not find repentance even though he sought it with crying and tears! (See Hebrews 12:17.)

4. We should say prayers

Nowhere in the bible does it say to merely “say” prayers. But everywhere, in both testaments, is a command to “seek God”. God discloses Himself to the seekers—not just to the casual enquirers. (See Psalms 42, 63, Matthew 6:7,33, Hebrews 11:6.)

5. God only expects us to give a tenth of our finances

Tithing is only a principle handed down from God to Adam and to his offspring; which is why Abel gave God a first fruit offering (see Genesis 4) and Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all gave God a tithe. This was reiterated again in the Law of Moses (Leviticus 27) and in the prophets (Malachi 3) and taught in the N.T. (See Matthew 23, Hebrews 7.)

That being said, when Jesus came He did not focus on a mere tithe—He commanded His disciples to surrender everything they had to Him! (See Luke 14: 26-33.)  This passage alone should dispel the notion that God only requires a tenth.

Nothing less than a total heart surrender of everything we are and have is expected by the Lord Jesus Christ (see Philippians 3, 2 Corinthians 5:15). Consequently, although it is still important to set at least 10 percent aside to give to God it doesn’t mean that you can do what you want with the other 90 percent. The earth is the Lord’s and He demands proper stewardship and obedience regarding what we do with 100 percent of our finances and possessions—not merely 10 percent.

6. The church is a meeting place

Christians continually refer to buildings that house church services as “the church”—which is why when going to said building they say, “we are going to church”. This in spite of the fact that Scripture teaches that His people are the church and that each believer makes up the temple of the Holy Spirit. (See 1 Corinthians 3:16,12.)

We need to change our language to comport with the reality that the building or cathedral we meet in is NOT the church, but merely houses the Body of Christ for corporate worship, biblical instruction and the Lord’s Supper.

7. Ministers are only in the church place

The word minister simply means servant. Since we are all called to be servants of God we are all ministers of God – irrespective of whether or not we are in full time church ministry. Whatever job you have, your employer is paying you (whether they know it or not) to be a minister of God, representing Him to the particular entity they work at.

8. Eternal life begins when we die physically

While many believers talk about going to heaven to be with God for eternity the truth of the matter is: eternal life begins the moment somebody receives Christ here on earth (see John 3:16-19; 5:24). Consequently, we can begin to enjoy the abundant (eternal) life now while living on earth!

9. The larger the church the more influence it has

The fact of the matter is, our nation has never had more mega churches while at the same time Christianity has never had as little impact on culture as it does today. Hence, there is not necessarily a correlation between the size of a church and its impact on the surrounding community.

There are even small to mid-sized churches that have far more impact on a community than mega churches who are only concerned with attracting their neighbors for Church growth and care not about the conditions of the communities of the unchurched.

10. There is no need for a true Christian to confess their sins

There is an unbiblical teaching going around in some hyper grace circles that, once a person is born again, they never need to confess another sin since Jesus paid the price for all sins, past, present and future. While it is true that Jesus paid for the sins of believers—past, present and future—we need to continually live a life of true repentance and apply the blood of Jesus to our life after we sin. Even as the Apostle John told all believers “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (see 1 John 1:9).

The apostle James also admonishes believers to “confess our faults one to another and pray for one another that we may be healed” (see James 5:16). If anyone teaches that Christians can live the rest of their life with unconfessed—un-repented of sin—after grieving the Holy Spirit of God (see Ephesians 4:30), then I do not know what bible they are reading but it is not the same one as I!
