Is Prince Harry’s ‘Spare’ The Beginning of the End for Royals? (Episode 044)

Prince Harry has set a record with his tell-all memoir Spare. The English-language version sold more than 1.4 million copies on launch day.

Penguin Random House, the prince’s publisher, said first full day sales of Spare represent the largest first-day sales total for any nonfiction book the company has ever published. Keep in mind that Penguin Random House is the world’s largest trade publisher, so that says a lot.

But did Harry’s memoir cross the line by revealing the underbelly of a family feud and, particularly what he describes as a troubled relationship with his brother William, heir to the throne?

This is Jennifer LeClaire, and this is Praying the News. On today’s broadcast, we’ll look at the impact of Prince Harry’s book. Is this the beginning of the end of the monarchy?

I’ll be right back after a message from our sponsor, Deliverance from Family Wounds.

Gina Centrello, president and publisher of the Random House Group, describes Prince Harry’s book this way: “Vulnerable and heartfelt, brave and intimate, Spare is the story of someone we may have thought we already knew, but now we can truly come to understand Prince Harry through his own words.”

According to the Independent’s Lucy Pavia, Spare “sets fire to the royal family.” She feels the book is “beautifully” written and “doesn’t so much lift the curtain on private royal life than rip it off and shake out its contents.”

But the reviews are mixed at best and vitriolic at worst.

Royal correspondent Sean Coughlan said Spare is “part confession, part rant and part love letter. In places it feels like the longest angry drunk text ever sent,”

Henry Mance wrote in the Financial Times, “Harry comes across as honest and reflective, but also angry, thin-skinned, disoriented.”

The Economist called the memoir an “ill-advised romp.”

Buckingham Palace has not publicly commented on the book.

Surely, this is part of the prophecy I released right after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Listen in to the prophecy related to King Charles III.

Talk about the end of the monarchy is nothing new. But Catherine Mayer, the royal analyst and biographer of King Charles, offers these thoughts:

“It is possibly something that will mark the beginning of the end of the monarchy, and that is what we should discuss. It is important, given the lack of trust in the state at the moment and an upsurge in rightwing politics. Members of the royal family have become our proxies for anger about racism, misogyny and wealth. This is, after all, an institution that stands for inequality, so there are huge things at stake.”

Sure, this is not the first scandal. There was King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne so he could marry divorcee Wallis Simpson. There was Princess Margaret’s controversial love life, Princess Charles’ love triangle with Diana and Camilla, Princess Diana’s death, and more. But no one from inside the institution, except perhaps Harry’s own mother, has dared to be so transparent about what they experienced in the Royal Family.

Harry is truly his mother’s son.

Mayer says part of the problem is the “layers of secrecy and obfuscation” that surround the royal family and encourage misunderstandings, according to The Guardian.

Mayer says ,“It is intended as a defence, but it will defeat the organisation if they concentrate on the personalities. The whole family is meant to be an idealised reflection of the British people themselves and Harry’s marriage to Meghan made the job much easier. The failure of that project is absolutely catastrophic for the royal family.”

Is it possible that William will never ascend to the throne? Could King Charles be represent the end of the House of Windsor dynasty?
